Inter-party Consultative Council in Transnistria endorses initiative of reforming region’s electoral system

The inter-party consultative council has endorsed the Patriotic party’s initiative of reforming the electoral legislation of the Transnistrian area. Before being given to the Transnistrian authorities, the project is to be debated by groups of experts, Info-Prim Neo's correspondent reports from Tiraspol. The Patriotic Party proposes a gradual instituting of the electoral system, proportionally on the party’s lists. At the first stage, a combined model is proposed. The number of seats of deputies will be the same, but the number of constituencies will raise, so that it will enable to take into account the interests of different social classes. This system works in 60 states. It is more objective and more transparent than the system applied now in the Transnistrian region, the Patriotic Party’s leaders said. “The initiative will lead to increasing the responsibility and administering the state system. In our opinion, this way is the most efficient, it includes all points of view of all social groups,” Oleg Smirnov, the chairman of the inter-party consultative Council, and the Patriotic Party’s leader said. At present, the majority electoral system (organized in uninominal constituencies; the candidate obtaining the biggest number of votes, wins in the electoral campaign) is applied in Transnistria.
