Intention to initiate referendum on presidential system reiterated at LibDem convention
“We don't have a political crisis, but a constitutional deadlock, which we'll overcome through a referendum”, stated Liberal Democrat leader at the party's III Congress on Saturday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Filat said the people should be able to elect the president like it elects Parliament, through direct vote.
“This way the president will have an adequate mandate
Next year we'll have to pass a serious test of changing the Constitution though a referendum and I am confident that our people will pass this test with dignity”, declared the LibDem leader.
He went on to express his regret that new elections will have to be held next year, blaming the Communists. “Unfortunately, the Communists didn't understand that their refusal to vote for a president is the start of their dissolution
I do not regret the dissolution, but the fact that Moldova will have to face new elections, in times when there are more pressing problems to solve”
Prime Minister Filat said that regardless of the hardships entailed by a new session of legislative elections, the government will make everything possible to give Moldova a free economy based on competitiveness. Salaries and pensions will be paid on time, he promised.
