A number of 500 surveillance cameras were to be set up on streets in Chisinau by November, but they weren’t. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the head of the Traffic Police Department Sergiu Armasu said technical problems are encountered in the organization of the auction in China, which makes the donation. Sergiu Armasu said that in a recent meeting of representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and the State Chancellery and Chinese officials, it was agreed that the works will start on January 1, 2012. “It is a grant and we should be glad that we have such possibilities. We accept because we do not have another solution. We think the People’s Republic of China will keep its word and we will have the given system installed in the municipality of Chisinau, as decided,” stated Sergiu Armasu. He added that a decision was taken to extend the grant from US$2.7 to US$4.7 million. The cameras will be fixed in accordance with the experience of another project implemented in partnership with two companies. Within this project, surveillance cameras were installed at two intersections in Chisinau – of the streets Vasile Alecsandri and Schusev and of Vasile Alecsandri and Kogalniceanu. Even if the supervision is now at a trial stage and the drivers and pedestrians who break the traffic rules are not punished, the number of violations decreased significantly and the drivers became more responsible, said Sergiu Armasu. The authorities in April announced that the over 500 surveillance cameras will be set up at 10 intersections with traffic lights and 180 intersections without traffic lights, near 60 schools, 17 universities and 27 preschool education institutions. The pictures were to be examined by a joint command center.
