Inspector suspected of striking fatally woman by car gets 30 days of arrest

The patrol officer who is suspected of hitting mortally a woman in a crosswalk while outside his working hours was remanded in custody for 30 days. The officer’s lawyer said they will challenge the decision taken by the Chisinau City Appeals Court.

Contacted by IPN for details, the acting head of the Chisinau City Prosecutor’s Office Oleg Afanasii said the officer was charged with violation of the road traffic rules that carries up to seven years in jail and leaving of the place of the accident that carries a fine, community service or up to two years in jail.

Oleg Afanasii noted remand detention was asked in connection with the gravity of the case. The accused refuses to make statements.

The General Police Inspectorate said the police officer refused to be tested with the Drager Alcotest, but allowed a blood sample to be taken from him. The results are not yet known.

A woman aged 36 was hit mortally in a crosswalk on Socoleni St in Chisinau in the evening of January 13. The hit-and-run driver was arrested shortly afterward. This was a patrol officer who was outside his working hours when the accident happened, according to the police. The vehicle was found on Podgorenilor St. The driver was in the car together with his wife.
