The bill concerning the status of Chisinau municipality, which was drafted by the Liberal MPs and which caused controversy among members of the Chisinau Council and among MPs, was passed in the final reading by the votes of 56 MPs on June 17, IPN reports.
The authors of the initiative said such a law is needed because many disagreements and confusion were witnessed in the activity of the public administration of Chisinau municipality owing to the absence of regulating legislation. This can lead to the appearance of disputes in courts, appropriation and causing of damage to the municipal property.
The Socialist MPs intensely criticized this bill, saying its provisions are unconstitutional and they will challenge the law in the Constitutional Court after it is adopted. According to them, this initiative offers more powers to the mayor general of Chisinau municipality to the detriment of the Chisinau Council.
At the beginning of the sitting, unaffiliated MP on behalf of the European People’s Party of Moldova Eugen Carpov said the bill should be improved because it was harshly criticized by MPs and civil society, but his proposal was rejected.
