Initiative groups that are in favor and against religion in schools seek justice in court

The Court of Appeals Chisinau postponed taking a decision in the suit filed by the initiative group for promoting a secular state against the Central Election Commission (CEC) until Friday, June 11. The group demands that the decision allowing collecting signatures in support of a referendum on teaching the Basis of Orthodoxy in schools be annulled. “The court said it postpones the hearing because the CEC did not present its position on our objections,” the executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf told Info-Prim Neo. The Center forms part of the initiative group for promoting a secular state. The representatives of the CEC proposed that the hearings be attended by delegates of the initiative group that pleads for the introduction of religion in schools. The other group accepted the proposal. “Most probably, tomorrow the hearing will be postponed again until the next week, more exactly to Monday. But we know that the religious group was authorized to collect signatures from Monday. We will insist that the decision be pronounced tomorrow,” Sergiu Ostaf said. The initiative group for promoting a secular state is composed of civil society activists. It pleads against the initiative to introduce religion as mandatory school subject and promotes the principle of separation of church and state and the non- involvement of the state in the activities of the religious communities.
