Initiative group aims to restore Heroes Cemetery in Chisinau

The initiative group of the project “Chisinau Heroes Cemetery. Requiem or Renaissance” initiated a series of activities with a view to sensitizing the authorities so that they give their consent to restoring the Chisinau-based Heroes Cemetery. One of the activities was the launch of a scientific publication about the situation of the cemetery, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ion Negrei, deputy head of the Association of Historians of Moldova, said the project’s objective is to restore the legal personality of the Heroes Cemetery. The initiative group hopes that the launched publication will help them obtain a reaction from the authorities. “The medical center built on the cemetery’s territory was demolished. The land later became the property of a foreign company. We want this plot to be under state ownership so that we are able to set up a commemorative symbol there in gratitude to those who fought in war,” said Ion Negrei. According to former MP Zoia Jalba, who is a member of the initiative group, the Heroes Cemetery is of internal importance as there were buried soldiers from six countries. They were killed in the First and Second World Wars. The Heroes Cemetery situated on Decebal Blvd. is about one hectare in area. It lost its legal personality in the 1960s, when a medical center was erected on its territory.
