A Moldovan was arrested on suspicion that he furnished mercenaries with information needed for staging military activities, especially for launching artillery attacks on the national army of Ukraine. The young man was arrested in the evening of May 17 following a series of special investigation measures taken by the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) in concert with the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office, IPN reports.
According to a press release of the SIS, the 28-year-old man from Ungheni town is suspected of working for separatist entities of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic. He gathered information on the territory controlled by the constitutional authorities of Ukraine.
When being questioned, the young man accepted his blame. Foreign identity cards were found on him, including a soldier’s record based on which he intended to return to southeastern Ukraine to continue to take part in the armed conflict.
The man was placed under arrest for 72 hours. He faces five to ten years in jail over mercenary work.
The SIS warns the Moldovan citizens about the seriousness and consequences of taking part in military activities in other states.
