Ministry of Education and Youth (MET), Student Alliance of Moldova, and the Republican Student Senate launched an information campaign against corruption in higher secondary education institutions on Thursday, December 14. They presented video and audio spots which are to be broadcasted till the end of the year by the most important TV and radio stations. The video spot shows the example of a student of the University of Medicine, who becomes a surgeon and has to perform an operation on his former professor whom he had bribed earlier for passing an exam. The slogan of the information campaign is “You could be in his place … Say no to corruption in education institutions”. Video and audio spots will be broadcasted till December 30. The Campaign also includes seminars attended by students and teachers, surveys among students concerning their proposals and their attitude on the phenomenon of corruption. Based on the obtained results, a strategy will be worked out, which will provide solutions for this problem. At the same time, Valentin Crudu, deputy minister of Education and Youth stated that this campaign and the efforts of the ministry will be useless “unless there is a common will of the university leadership and the students”. In order to implement the campaign, MET will assign 30,000 lei, and the US Embassy offered a USD 2,000 grant for the organization of seminars and surveys. Several media institutions announced their support for the campaign. The deputy minister stated that “Moldova 1” public television refused to participate in this campaign, but didn’t provide any details. According to a survey operated by Transparency International Moldova, 27.7% of the respondents asserted that they bribed professors, placing education institutions the fourth in the 2005 top of the official bodies where citizens pay bigger bribes, after custom services, police and healthcare institutions. According to the same survey, the medium size of a bribe in education is 1,000 lei.
