Independence Day wreath-laying: ‘Let us all come together as a nation’

“Today, as we mark 33 years since the declaration of Independence, we celebrate the courage, determination and sacrifice of those who made this country independent then. Our task today is diligent work so that we can build a European future for our country, and that means building a good life here, in Moldova”, stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Grieving Mother memorial, alongside Speaker Igor Grosu. President Maia Sandu could not attend due to testing positive for Covid.

Recean declared that today’s holiday is a good opportunity for all citizens of Moldova to unite. “Let us all come together as a nation and show determination to move forward towards a European future. Independence, first of all, means our determination to be independent and work for this independence”, the premier declared.

Speaker Grosu noted that 33 years is “a beautiful age”. “Maybe for history it’s not much, but for a state that got its Independence and went through multiple trials, I think it’s a nice anniversary. In particular, this anniversary precedes some very important events for us. Of course, I am talking about the European integration process. One thing we have to understand from our brief history: for independence you have to fight, for respect you have to fight. It’s not something you take for granted. We have to work for this”, declared Igor Grosu.

“We worked and we will continue working to show determination, to be tougher, more persistent and more confident in what we do, and we will get there in a very short time, because we no longer have time for experiments. And the objective is very clear – everyone is mobilized and in the shortest time we will reach the objective we all want: to become members of the great European family. Happy anniversary!”, added Grosu.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also joined the congratulatory chorus. “Today we celebrate the 33rd Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova. And we are proud to welcome her to the starting line of the EU accession negotiations. Being independent means choosing your own path. We chose peace and stability. Now the most important test awaits us: the transformation of our country into a truly democratic and European state. On this day of celebration, whether you are at home or abroad, let us look with confidence to the future and work together to achieve our European dream. With every step forward, we will show that we are a strong, united and dedicated people”, said the MFA in its message.
