Independence Day is a day when we remember that we all live in one country and have one motherland

The Independence Day is a day when we must remember that we all live in one country and have one motherland, while the feeling of being independent is the most pleasant of all the feelings. Such an opinion was stated by politicians who took part in the Independence Day celebrations on August 27, IPN reports.

The events started with the laying of flowers at the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great. President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker Igor Corman and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca were the first to lay flowers. “It is probably the nicest feeling that a person can have when feeling independent in taking decisions and in behavior. When we speak about independence in a democratic society, we speak about the people’s right to behave freely within the legal limits,” Nicolae Timofti told the press.

Igor Corman said the Independence Day is a day that should remind us that we all live in a country, have a motherland and aim to together build a better future. “I think that the path that we chose – the                  path to development – is the correct one. I’m sure that we will be in higher moods at other celebrations of the kind and we will ascertain that we have a better life,” he stated.

Romanian Premier Victor Ponta and European Commissioner for Energy Guenther Oettinger also laid flowers at the ruler’s monument. The event was attended by the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat and the leader of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu, and the opposition leaders – the Communist Party head Vladimir Voronin and the Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu.

The celebrations were officially started in the Great National Assembly Square by the Orchestra “Lautarii”. For the first time, folk bands staged a parade of folk clothes and then gave a concert. Those who attended the celebrations sang and danced together with the functionaries.

The state officials as well as ordinary people also laid flowers to the Grieving Mother monument at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”, where there were commemorated those killed in battle while defending the country. The Nistru war veterans and relatives of killed heroes observed a minute’s silence.

As last year on the Independence Day, Nicolae Timofti gave a reception at the Palace of the Republic. The event involved MPs, ministers, representatives of local public authorities, diplomats, civil society representatives and people of culture.

The celebrations ended with fireworks, the people’s round dance and a recital given by national singers.
