Increasing Moldova's agricultural productivity needs investments of $2 billion, expert says

Moldova needs investments of 1 or 2 billion dollars to raise the agricultural productivity and to cope with natural calamities. The statement was made on Wednesday, June 18, by the expert of the NGO “Business Consulting Institute”, Victor Morozov, during a seminar themed “Practices of diminishing the risks for field crops” Info-Prim Neo reports. This year, only 5% of the investments in economy will be channeled towards the agricultural sector, he stated for the press, specifying that the agriculture’s productivity may be increased only through systematic investment. A range of specialists in agriculture, participants in the seminar, uttered opinions that enhancing the quality and quantity of Moldovan produce may be realized by replacing mineral fertilizers with organic ones. According to statistics, in Moldova, organic fertilizers are used 10 times less compared with the 80s. Although global heating has an obvious impact on agriculture, the researcher says the effects of global heating are not yet very strong and will become noticeable in 20 years, and everyone should be ready for the change. Moldovan agriculturists hope to harvest this year about 1.4 million tones of cereal crops, if the weather is favorable. The seminar was organized by the Business Consulting Institute within the project “The National Strategy of Diminishing Natural Risks and Climate Change”, financed by the World Bank.
