Inclusion of children with impairments regarded with skepticism
The Ministry of Education is working on the inclusive education strategy. The proposals concerning the inclusion of the children with impairments contained in the draft Education Code will be discussed in two weeks, the head of the Preschool, Primary and Secondary Education Division Valentin Crudu has told Info-Prim Neo.
“We must not hurry up. These children will be included in ordinary schools gradually as the society is not yet prepared,” Crudu said.
Valentin Crudu also said that not all the parents of children with impairments support the inclusion idea.
“The legislation allows including the children with special needs in ordinary education institutions, but the request must come from the parents. However, they usually do not want this. It is easier for them to take their children to specialized schools or let them study at home,” Valentin Crudu said, adding that the children going to ordinary schools also aren't ready to accept the children with impairments.
A study was conducted last yearend to assess the positive inclusion practices in ordinary secondary schools. The executive director of the day center “Speranta” Viorica Cojocaru said the study showed that the children with impairments develop better in such schools.
Currently, 350 children with impairments attend ordinary secondary schools.
