In such situations like the election of the president of the Constitutional Court (CC), there should be no hurry, Promo-LEX lawyer Vadim Vieru stated in the talk show “Black box” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.

According to him, transparency should be ensured at the Constitutional Court as well. There should be procedures that the people should also know, such as what plans the person has as the future CC president. “No one denies the merits of Mihai Poalelungi. He served as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, but when a person applies not for a simple managerial post, this should provide particular arguments,” stated Vadim Vieru.

Stefan Gligor, programs director at the Center for Politics and Reforms, said the swiftness with which Mihai Poalelungi was named to the new post reveals an agreement reached with the parliamentary majority, which now rules in Moldova. “And this is the thing that worries me. In fact, what worries me more is the lack of a transparency and of a contest as the participation by one person cannot be considered a contest,” stated Stefan Gligor. According to him, this is a desperate move by the government to promote a suitable person supported by the parliamentary majority whose legitimacy is in question.

Ion Guzun, legal adviser at the Legal Resources Center, said he sees no hurry in the appointment of Mihai Poalelungi as Constitutional Court president given that he was named judge of the CC on March 6. “Mister Poalelungi has served as a judge at the Constitutional Court for ten days already. Given that Tudor Pantiru tendered his resignation in January, such a variant was expected,” stated Ion Guzun.

On March 16, shortly after being confirmed as Constitutional Court judge, Mihai Poalelungi was appointed as president of the Court in a plenary meeting of the CC.
