In new DOOM edition, such words as “like”, “fake news” and “check-in” will become Romanian

The third edition of the Romanian Language Orthographic, Orthopedic and Morphological Dictionary (DOOM), which is coordinated by Ioana Vintilă-Rădulescu, Doctor of Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti”, incorporates 3,600 new words that include frequently used words borrowed from English. Among these are “black Friday”, “breaking news”, “check-in”, “cool” and “fake news”. The new elements can be easily detected as they are preceded by the symbol “+”. The new DOOM will become available to the general public by the end of this year.

“DOOM is the normative Romanian language dictionary that presents the mandatory norms of the Romanian Academy in three aspects that are shown in its title: how the current literary Romanian language words are written, are pronounced and are used from grammatical viewpoint,” Ioana Vintilă-Rădulescu stated in an interview for RFE/RL’s Romanian Service, being quoted by IPN.

The new edition includes 65,500 words. DOOM 3 also incorporates about 3,000 changes marked with “!” (exclamation mark). “It is not an orthographic reform. The basic norms remained unchanged. These are generally precise changes that sometimes affect particular series. The old forms were kept near the new ones so as not to shock.”

Multiple variants were eliminated from the new DOOM. “The tendency is to have a normed language. The people want to know how it is said exactly and no other variants.”

Among xenisms, foreign words and expression that are not adjusted to the particularities of the Romanian language, Ioana Vintilă-Rădulescu mentioned: “afterschool”, “audiobook”, “bitcoin”, “Black Friday”, “breaking news” “check-in”, “cool”, “deal”, “dealer”, “dispenser”, “face to face”, “fake”, “fake news”, “fresh”, “gay”, “hacker”, “hairstylist”, “home delivery”, “like”, “low cost”, “outdoor”, “part-time”, “selfie”, “shopping center”, “show business”, “start-up”, “take away”, “training”, “voucher”.

Linguist Ioana Vintilă-Rădulescu and the team she coordinates had worked for five years on the third edition of DOOM.
