In-memoriam manifestations dedicated to Ion Vatamanu
The late poet and scientist Ion Vatamanu is remembered on the occasion of his 70th birth anniversary on May 1 by the Philology Institute and the Chemistry Institute of the Academy of Sciences that is organising a symposium to commemorate this remarkable personality of Moldovan science and culture.
According to the Academy of Sciences press service, the event’s agenda includes speeches by Academician Mihai Cimpoi, chairman of the Writers’ Union of Moldova, Ana Bantos, director of the Philology Institute, and others.
At the Cronograf Festival’s opening, (an international documentary film festival) there will be shown an in-memoriam documentary about the poet. The film is an OWH TV Studio production, directed by Leontina Vatamanu, the poet’s daughter.
Poet and essayist, but having a scientific chemist diploma, he worked, after graduating from the State University in 1960, as a laboratory supervisor at the Academy of Sciences. In 1990 he became Member of Parliament and head of the parliamentary Committee for Culture. He died on August 3, in 1993, in Chisinau.
