The number of reported traffic accidents dropped from 2097 cases last year to 1811 in 2023, a 14% decrease. The number of fatal accidents also dropped from 203 to 183 year on year, and so did the number of people injured in traffic accidents, from 2348 to 2082. This was reported by Igor Postu, department head at the National Inspectorate for Public Security, during a program on Agro TV.
According to Postu, the leading causes include speeding, failure to yield, unsafe lane changes, DUI, and failure to keep a safe distance.
Pavel Popov, a driving theory tutor from Chisinau, noted that the road traffic system consists of three elements: the driver, the technical characteristics of their vehicle and the road infrastructure. The driver can anticipate certain risk situations, if they are well prepared. It is best for the driver to subconsciously develop preventive driving. “Even if they don’t initially notice a pedestrian crossing, it’s good practice to drive as if they could appear at any moment so the driver can stop in time to avoid impact”, he said.
