Immunization – simpler to prevent than to cure

The European Immunization Week, called “Immunization – simpler to prevent, than to cure”, will unfold from April 20 to 26, Info-Prim Neo reports Preventing the transmissible diseases through immunization is the best investment in the public health, diminishing the medical, social and economic losses, reads a communiqué issued by the Health Ministry. No cases of poliomyelitis, tetanus, rubeola, diphtheria, measles, D viral hepatitis in children were registered in Moldova in 2008, also due to immunization. The number of cases of B viral hepatitis on children dwindled to three cases (2007 – 19 cases), rubeola – to one case (2007- three cases.) Moldova coped with a mumps epidemic in 2008, which had started in October 2007. As many as 30,000 cases were registered, the incidence reaching 709 cases per 100,000, the highest in the Moldovan history of epidemiological supervision. After a mass vaccination campaign from March to May, a s 73% of the people from the risk-group got vaccinated, the epidemic was stopped. According to statistical reports on the vaccinations in 2008, 98% of the up-to-12-month babies were vaccinated. Specialists note there are still children who are not vaccinated without any reason. The Immunization National Program for 2006-2010 provides finances for vaccines and the free access of the population to vaccination services.
