IMF forecasts economic growth of 0.3% in Moldova this year
The economic growth in Moldova this year may be 0.3%, the head of the IMF mission that is in Chisinau Nikolay Gueorguiev said in an informal discussion with the press, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Nikolay Gueorguiev explained that the IMF lowered the economic growth forecast for Moldova because the global agricultural output fell by over 30% following the drought and a number of EU countries saw recessions that affected the CIS states, which are Moldova’s commercial partners.
In 2012, the IMF reviewed the economic growth forecast for Moldova for several times, depending on the economic developments. Initially, the growth was projected at 4%, then at 3%.
For 2013, the IMF anticipates an economic growth for Moldova of 4%. The Ministry of Economy is more optimistic. It forecast a growth of 5%. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said that a lot depends on the economic developments in the EU member states and on the flexibility with which the agricultural sector of Moldova will recover.
