About 1,300 cubic meters of residual water pour daily into the Byk River in the perimeter of Chisinau municipality alone, while the residual water that gets into Ghidighici lake daily totals 800 cubic meters and this water is then used to irrigate the farmland. This is the finding of a group of young ecologists who went on an expedition on the Byk. According to them, the illegal discharges are the main source polluting the river.
Contacted by IPN, the head of the National Environment Center Ina Coseru said that most of the illegal discharges were identified near Varnita village, where few of the residents and companies are connected to the sewerage system and thus pour the residual water directly into the river.
“No wastewater treatment station discharges the water according to norms. Even the modern station that was recently built in Calarasi does not work at full capacity,” said Ina Coseru, adding that partially cleaned water is permanently discharged from the wastewater treatment station of Chisinau.
The ecological monitoring showed that the quality of water in Calarasi district is relatively high, but there are accumulation lakes created without authorization and the waste there is not managed and stored. In Straseni district, the waste dump is situated in the meadow of the river. In the municipality of Chisinau, there were discovered illegal car washes, discharges and waste stored in the river.
Based on the results of the expedition, the initiative group formulated a statement with recommendations and submitted it to the Chisinau City Hall and the Ministry of the Environment. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca informed the ecologists that the City Hall does not have instruments to act in such a situation, while Deputy Minister of the Environment Lazar Chirica said the Ministry has a plan of action to deal with the related problems and the young ecologists should not make a show on this subject.
The expedition on the Byk up to Gura Bacului, where the river pours into the Nistru, was staged by 25 young ecologists on July 7-15.
