Ilie Cazac was released owing to concerted effort, Eugen Carpov

Ilie Cazac was set free owing to the concerted effort of foreign organizations and the parties involved in the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov stated for Info-Prim Neo. “It is important that all the national institutions involved, including the Government of Moldova, the ministries, the departments, Parliament and the Presidential Office as well as civil society joined efforts. On the other hand, we enjoyed constant support from our international partners. I will first of all mention the players involved in the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format and other not less important players like the partners from Germany, France, Italy and such international organizations as the Council of Europe and the UN,” said Eugen Carpov. He added that the Government will make effort to help Ilie Cazac return to a normal life. Asked by the press about how Ilie Cazac was released, Vlad Filat avoided giving details, saying the young man should be allowed now to enjoy his freedom. He stressed that the problem of Ilie Cazac was every time high on the agenda of the discussions he had with the Transnistria leader Igor Smirnov. A former employee of the Tighina-based Tax Inspectorate, the 26-year-old Ilie Cazac was arrested by representatives of the so-called Ministry of Security of the breakaway republic of Transnistria on March 19, 2010, being accused of treason and espionage for Moldova. On February 9, 2011, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Ilie Cazac wrote a number of pardoning letters to Igor Smirnov, but his requests were refused.
