“The Romanian nation between the Nistru and Prut is in danger of death. We should expect death if we do not return to the motherland Romanian within five years,” said the president of the Unionist Movement Ilie Bratu, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The statement was made at a meeting held to condemn the consequences of the Molotov- Ribbentrop Pact for Bessarabia on the Classics’ Alley in Chisinau on August 23. For the third consecutive year, the meeting was co-organized by the Association for Liquidation of the Consequences of the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact and the Unionist Movement of Moldova. Asked when the objective they set will be achieved, Ilia Bratu said: “It depends on all of us because we brought the Communists to power, by vote or by non-participation in elections.” The Unionist Movement’s secretary general Iacob Golovca, doctor in history and the president of the Association for Liquidation of the Consequences of the Molotov – Ribbentrop, said that Moldova must be part of Romania. “The Communist Russia’s attack on Moldova on June 28, 1940 is a crime. The creation of the Moldovan Republic in August 1940 is another crime,” Golovca said. The meeting participants approved a resolution, which calls on the national-patriotic and pro-European parties to create a single unionist social-political party for the future elections and to work out a plan of action for achieving these objectives. Also, the resolution calls upon the Romanian authorities “to acknowledge the tragic situation of the Romanians living on the left bank of the Prut, leaving the hostility of the Moldovan authorities aside.” Signed on August 23, 1939, the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact was an additional document to the non-aggression treaty between the USSR and Hitler’s Germany whereby the two states shared Europe into two spheres of influence. The incorporation of Bessarabia, Northern Bucovina and Herta Region into the Soviet Union was one of the consequences of the Molotov – Ribbentrop Pact.
