Igor Grosu: Ursula von der Leyen came with a powerful message of support

The European Union supports the Republic of Moldova and the visits paid by high-ranking European officials to Chisinau are an additional proof of this. According to Speaker Igor Grosu, the visit made by the President of the European Commission to Moldova is a powerful message of support for the country’s citizens and the largest part of the announced financial assistance is intended as support for the population during the cold period of the year, IPN reports.

Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday announced that the EU had put together an additional energy support package for Moldova. It is pledging €200 million - €100 million in grants and €100 million in loans - to help Moldova meet its gas supply needs. It will also provide an additional €50 million for budgetary support to Moldova to support those most vulnerable.

“President Ursula von der Leyen came with a very powerful message of support. She appreciated the way we opened our homes and country and helped our friends from Ukraine. They realize the energy problems that persist everywhere in Europe, but especially in our country and in Ukraine. She also came with assistance. The financial resources will be used to purchase gas from other sources. A part of these resources will go to help the population during the cold period of the year. The money will come in the nearest future as we need it this winter,” Igor Grosu stated in the program “Prime Time” on PrimeTV channel.

A visit to Moldova is today paid by the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. The security crisis in the region and the harmonization of the national legislation with the Community acquis are key items on the program of discussions.

“With President Roberta Metsola, we will hold an even that will involve a group of members of the European Parliament and our MPs. Among the main issues is the adjustment of our legislation to the Community acquis. We will discuss the nine conditions we need to meet following the granting of the EU candidate status. A very important event will take place in Paris at the end of November. In the meeting hosted by President Macron, the Republic of Moldova will present its programs and will explain what kind of support it needs,” stated the Speaker.

The third donors’ conference “Moldova Support Platform” will be held in Paris on November 21. The first two such conferences were hosted by Berlin and Bucharest.
