Igor Grosu: Symbols that promote war should not be present in our society

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu made it clear that a bill to ban the use of war symbols on Moldova’s territory is to be adopted by the MPs. It comes mostly to the letter “Z” that is used as a sign of distinction on Russian military units and as a symbol of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Moldova subscribed to a series of international sanctions against Russia, but the main goal of the Moldovan authorities is to help Ukraine by housing refugees, IPN reports.

The Speaker noted the assertions that Moldova didn’t support the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation are false. The official Chisinau subscribed to a series of measures aimed at penalizing Russia for its aggression, but avoided making this thing public.

“Moldova co-sponsored the declaration of the Unite Nations. Moldova also implemented the banking sanctions imposed on Russian banks, as regards SWIFT, the use of Mastercard. Moldova also subscribed when the EBRD imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation and Belarus, blocking the two states’ access to loans. We did it, but didn’t make this public. Each country decided where it can intervene better amid the current developments. We decided to do what we can do best at home. And we care for the Ukrainian citizens. I think caring for the children and mothers of the Ukrainian people is also a contribution,” Igor Grosu stated in the talk show “Black Box” on TV8 channel.

The Speaker implied that by May 9, when a part of society celebrates the Victory Day, the war symbols could be banned, primarily the letter “Z” and the controversial Ribbon of Saint George.

“It goes to all the symbols, signs and all kinds of things that promote war, violence and that should not be present in Moldovan society. I refer to what publicizes war and has nothing to do with the state symbols. Ukraine defends the whole Europe, pays with the lives of the own citizens for the whole Europe. The statements made by all the officials of Western chancelleries who come to the Republic of Moldova note two things about us. The first thing is the exemplary way in which the Republic of Moldova manages the refugee crisis and the second thing is that we clearly understand the way in which we subscribe to particular sanctions,” said Igor Grosu.

He reiterated that there is now no information to confirm an eventual involvement of the Republic of Moldova in the war through the Russian troops that were illegally detached to the Transnistrian region.
