Igor Grosu: On October 20, people will clearly say what direction Moldova should follow

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced that the legislature is preparing all the necessary steps to set the date of the referendum and presidential election. ”On October 20, the voice of the people will clearly say in which direction we want to take the Republic of Moldova and the sovereign decision of the citizens will also be enshrined in the Constitution,” Igor Grosu told a press briefing, being quoted by IPN.

On Thursday, the parliamentary group of the Party of Action and Solidarity registered the draft decision on the holding of the national constitutional referendum. On April 16, the Constitutional Court gave a positive opinion on the PAS MPs’ initiative to revise the Constitution by referendum. At the plebiscite, the citizens will be asked: “Are you for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”.

After Parliament adopts the draft decision, the decision will be remitted to the Central Election Commission for the initiation of the procedure for holding the national referendum.

“We have no time to lose. It’s time for the Constitution to clearly stipulate that our place is in the family of the European Union, where peace is guaranteed and welfare is ensured. We are Europeans. Our history shows that we are Europeans. The values we are guided by confirm that the Europeans are Europeans and we deserve to have the same standard of living, the same rights and freedoms as in the countries of the European Union,” said Igor Grosu.

According to him, the European integration is a country project that doesn’t belong to a person or a party, but is a project of all the citizens and is for the future generations. “I call on all the parties, associations of the country, of the diaspora to participate in promoting the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Moldova’s integration into the European family is an objective that is above political and party interests,” stated the Speaker.

The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union was announced by President Maia Sandu at an event in which the head of state informed that she intends to compete for a new presidential term.
