Igor Grosu: No matter what CC decides, this decision will impact on local elections

The Moldovan authorities are waiting for the Constitutional Court’s decision on the admission or non-admission of representatives of the former Shor Party to elections and will later come with solutions to secure the electoral space, said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, referring to the challenging of the Election Code provision that bans particular members of the outlawed Shor Party from running in elections. The official noted that a battle is now being given to make sure that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova enjoy fair elections, while the representatives of the Kremlin do not influence the electoral process, IPN reports.

On September 28, the Constitutional Court (CC) suspended the effects of the law according to which members of the executive body and those holding elective posts of a party that is declared unconstitutional are banned from standing as candidates in elections. The Speaker said the authorities are waiting for the CC’s definitive decision on the issue and are hopeful that the representatives of the Kremlin will be unable to influence the electoral process.

“No matter what decision the Court takes, this will have an impact on the local elections and will motivate or demotivate some of the electoral players. We will further take all the legal measures to prevent bandits who are the spearheads of the Russian Federation from destabilizing the situation. I hope the decision makers, either from Parliament, the Government or the law enforcement agencies, realize the context and the dangers to which the Republic of Moldova is exposed. We do not fight against these bandits. We are in an open confrontation with the Russian Federation. Not even the Kremlin denies this. That’s why when such a hybrid war represents a real threat to national security, I hope the decision makers will not ignore the context,” Igor Grosu stated in the program “In Depth” on ProTV Chisinau channel.

The Speaker noted it is absolutely imperative that the CC judges provide a definitive solution to this issue as soon as possible as the election campaign starts officially on October 6.

“I think they need to pronounce on this issue as the elections are coming. We enter the election campaign on Saturday. The rules of the game must be very clear, especially for the bandits whom I do not even see in the election campaign. The speed at which this article was suspended shows that the High Court wants to ensure clarity. We are calmly waiting for a decision and will take action to secure the electoral space of the Republic of Moldova depending on that decision. We will come up with solutions so as not to allow the bandits, the representatives of the Kremlin to affect the electoral process,” said Igor Grosu.

If the High Court upholds the Election Code provision that bans particular members of the outlawed Shor Party from running in elections, over 600 members of this former party will be unable to run as candidates in the November 5 local elections and in the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
