Igor Grosu: New NAC director will be named soon

The Speaker of Parliament said the procedure for appointing a new director of the National Anticorruption Center will be launched soon. Igor Grosu noted the institution should become functional and the legislature’s prerogative is to name the new administration of NAC after former director Ruslan Flocea was dismissed. The idea of merging the National Anticorruption Center and the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office into one entity needs to be debated and the capacities of NAC will be strengthened meanwhile, IPN reports.

Under the law, the NAC director is no longer selected at a public contest. This is appointed by Parliament at the suggestion of at least 20 MPs. The Speaker said that a new director will be named by the end of this year so that NAC is managed as efficiently as possible.

“Progress in this regard will be made soon. I had one interaction with the acting director of NAC and asked him to ensure the proper functioning of the institution, until a new director is named. NAC should show that it is a viable institution that fights corruption. I know that it has capacity, but this hasn’t been put to good use yet. The merger with the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office and the creation of the model of the National Anticorruption Directorate will take time and the institution’s functionality should be ensured until then,” Igor Grosu stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

He noted that the vacancies at the other institutions that are under the Parliament’s oversight will be also filled by the end of the current session. Even if the government earlier announced that the directors of the National Agency for Energy Regulation should be dismissed, now they consider this is not opportune.

“We plan to fill the vacant posts on the Competition Council until the end of this session. There is one vacancy at NAER too and the procedure will be launched for filling this following the resignation of Ștefan Creangă. As to the other directors, we do not need to hurry here. This winter should be passed well, but we should not relax,” stated Igor Grosu.

Parliament earlier adopted a law to make the heads of institutions that are under the legislative body’s oversight more accountable.
