Igor Grosu: In time Romania has been a true supporter of Moldova

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that in time Romania has been a true supporter of the Republic of Moldova and the range of the areas of cooperation expanded much beyond the traditional character of good neighborly relations. The Republic of Moldova constantly benefitted from the unconditional assistance of Romania, acquiring a special connotation starting with 2010 through the establishment of a Bilateral Strategic Partnership for supporting the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova. The statements were made in the first joint meeting of the Parliaments of the Republic of Moldova and Romania that is held in Chisinau today, IPN reports.

“Romania has defended and promoted in time the cause of the Republic of Moldova among the European institutions and the member states that at different stages showed rather skeptical attitudes to the Republic of Moldova’s perspectives to manage to secure its road to democracy, with a functional market economy and authentic rule of law. Romania knew to make a clear difference between the fate of the Moldovan citizens, on the one hand, and the evil goals of the rules of the Republic of Moldova, on the other hand. Even when Romania witnessed a hostile attitude on the part of Moldovan leaders, it had the wisdom and courage to help the Moldovans,” stated the official.

According to him, Romania has always been aware that the rapprochement with the EU is the only viable solution for transforming the Republic of Moldova, which can facilitate the country’s integration into the big European family. Owing to the support of Romania, Moldova can become connected to the EU in a practical way.

Igor Grosu said this is a difficult period not only at regional level, with direct socioeconomic effects on the countries – the COVID-19 pandemic, the sudden and huge rise in the natural gas prices, the war in Ukraine. “These huge crises haven’t depended on us and weren’t caused by us, but we are those who are obliged to support the Moldovans and to overcome them together with dignity, while the confidence that the Republic of Moldova has the opportunity to build its own future and the real chance to become part of the European family would encourage us on this road, would offer our citizens hope and optimism,” stated the Speaker.

A statement is to be signed in the first joint meeting of the Parliaments of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. Before the meeting, the delegations of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania led by Presidents Florin-Vasile Cîțu and Ion-Marcel Ciolacu laid flowers at the Monument to Ruler Stephan the Great and Holy in central Chisinau.
