Moldova’s rapprochement with the European Union and the obtaining of the candidate status do not envision the renouncing of the neutrality status stipulated in the Constitution, said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. According to him, the signing of the application to join the EU does not mean joining of a military bloc. The Speaker called on all the political forces in Chisinau to refrain from electoral initiatives similar to the PCRM-PSRM opposition’s proposals concerning Moldova’s permanent neutrality, IPN reports.
Igor Grosu said the speculations about eventual renouncing of the neutrality status are aimed at stirring things up inside Moldovan society. The candidate status is not incompatible with the neutrality status.
“The Constitution provides that we are a neutral state. It is our commitment and our decision. The EU membership status does not mean NATO membership status. By our status, we contribute to what security on the border of the European Union means. By our decisions, we managed to keep calmness and to be well-organized. All the speculations on the issue are aimed at generating tensions. Since the start of the war, we have witnessed multiple attempts to contaminate the information sphere. That’s why we intervene promptly when we hear all kinds of lies about military actions. The European integration aspirations do not oblige us to modify the neutrality status,” Igor Grosu stated in the talk show “Prime Time” on PrimeTV channel.
He noted that Socialist-Communist bill regarding Moldova’s permanent neutrality is an electoral initiative. Amid the regional security crisis, any initiative that can destabilize the situation is contraindicated.
“We made a call to everyone to abandon the attempts to show their political might in this period and not to be preoccupied with the political rating. In the current situation, the parties should look less at the position in the political rankings. Everyone should mobilize so that we overcome this situation. When there is an electoral campaign, they will be able to employ their electoral phantasies. I saw that most of the parties understood the message” stated Igor Grosu.
On Monday, the 27 EU member states agreed to initiate consultations on the eventual entry of Georgia, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova into the community bloc based on the three countries’ applications for EU membership.
