Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu assured that President Maia Sandu will soon make an announcement concerning the filing of an application for EU membership so that the Republic of Moldova obtains the candidate country status. Ukraine already submitted such an application and this is examined by the European institutions, IPN reports.
During the visit paid to Chisinau by the High Representatives of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, President Maia Sandu said that the war in Ukraine makes the authorities step up the European integration process. She noted the Republic of Moldova’s entry into the EU will ensure the country’s security and economic development. In this connection, the Speaker said that President Sandu will soon make important announcements about the European integration.
“This application will be submitted and Missis President will soon make public details about this gesture. In the discussions with the High Representative, Vice President of the European Commission, we made it clear that most of our citizens chose the European integration by the vote in the last parliamentary and presidential elections. By our behavior of the last few days, we proved to ourselves and to the others that we are pro-European. We can be solidary, can lend a hand and can be empathic and well-organized. We strongly believe that the Republic of Moldova deserves a very clear European perspective,” Igor Grosu stated in a special edition on the public TV channel.
The Speaker explained that the Moldovan authorities decided not to subscribe to the sanctions imposed by the Western states on Russia because Moldova’s priority is now to more efficiently manage the flow of Ukrainian refugees.
“By our decisions and by our behavior, we did what we could best. We took care of the people. I ask those who support the sanctions to think about several things – if these sanctions would have ensured our energy security, would have helped the people who fled their homes, would have offered increased security to our citizens who are in Russia, or would have helped resolve the conflict in Transnistria. If we consider these things, I believe we took the most correct decision. We decided to help the stricken Ukrainians and to do our best here,” stated Igor Grosu.
Two days ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed and submitted Ukraine’s application for EU membership. Later, the European Parliament adopted a resolution whereby it recommended the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to consider granting Ukraine the candidate status.
