The Head of State’s initiatives concerning referendums are populist and electoral in character and are doomed to failure, MP of the ruling alliance Anatolie Zagorodnyi stated in the program “Place for dialogue” on the public station “Radio Moldova”, IPN reports.

“These are populist statements that most probably will produce no result. Mister Dodon wants to impress his voters, to show that he consults the people given that he was elected by the people. The problems can be solved in Parliament and we must become an authentic parliamentary state. Dodon’s initiatives entail large costs that will be covered by the people,” said the Social-Democratic MP.

Zagorodnyi also said that some of Dodon’s initiatives will be stopped at the incipient stage as they run counter to the Constitution. “Dodon wants a referendum to annul the law that apparently makes the people restore the stolen US$1 billion. But the budget law cannot be put up for such a referendum. So, I advise Mister Dodon to concentrate his efforts on the law enforcement agencies so that those to blame are punished swifter, while the money is restored,” he stated.

The MP invited President Dodon to a dialog. “Igor Dodon will obtain nothing as regards the dissolution of Parliament. Even if a referendum is held, its results will anyway go through Parliament. I’m also for amending the Constitution, but Dodon’s method is not efficient. A good result can be obtained only by dialog. The President should cooperate with Parliament and have discussions,” stated the ex-Communist.

In a news conference on January 24, President Igor Dodon said he could initiate a number of referendums to dissolve Parliament, to repeal the law that makes the repayment of the stolen US$1 billion the people’s burden, to federalize Moldova and to pronounce on the Constitutional Court’s judgment whereby he was obliged to accept the candidates for minister proposed by the Prime Minister. He noted he will commence referendums every time it is necessary.
