President Igor Dodon said that together with the validation of the parliamentary election results, he is ready to convoke the first sitting of the legislative body. He noted he is ready to invite the party leaders to discussions and later to propose a powerful candidate for the premiership. If a consensus is not reached, Igor Dodon considers early legislative elections should be initiated as soon as possible, probably together with the local elections, IPN reports.
In a press briefing on February 25, President Dodon said that after the Constitutional Court validates or invalidates the elections during March 13-15, the Head of State can convoke the constitution sitting of Parliament, within 30 days of the election day. “So, on March 26 or 27 at the latest, as the President of the Republic of Moldova, if the elections are validated, I will convoke the first sitting of Parliament. If the elections are declared illegitimate, rigged, unrecognized, the elections are rerun not earlier than 60 days and not later than 90 days of the last elections,” he stated.
If the parties that entered Parliament after March 15-16 request the legislature’s siting to be called earlier, Igor Dodon said he can do this. He is also ready to have meetings with the leaders of the parties that passed the election threshold. “It is too early to say if coalitions or alliances are formed, but we should take into account any scenario. If some of these parties after the meetings are ready to form a parliamentary majority, after the consultations I will field the candidate for Prime Minister, according to the procedure,” stated Igor Dodon.
“The not at all easy election campaign is over, but a more interesting period starts. I’m firmly convinced that we will cope with all these discussions and provocations. I refer to Moldovan society.”.
