Igor Dodon will decide whether to run in parliamentary elections or not by January 24

President Igor Dodon said that until January 24, 2019, when the lists of candidates for MP should be ready, he will decide whether to run in the parliamentary elections or not. In a news conference on October 5, he noted he does not consider he cannot run in the given elections, IPN reports.

Asked how legal his participation in the elections would be if he does not vacate the office of President, Igor Dodon said it is well known who makes and interprets the laws in the Republic of Moldova. These could act harshly in relation to the presidential institution, but the people would not tolerate something like this.

Igor Dodon stated that on the one hand, his political opponents want to create the impression that they are powerful and are not afraid of anyone. On the other hand, they want to impose impediments on the President so that he could not run in the parliamentary elections. This have never happened before. “During the 27 years of independence, the President wasn’t banned from running, including when this was elected by Parliament and when Mister Snegur and Mister Luchinski were elected by the people. They had no limitation then,” stated President Dodon. “We will see what our opponents do, but we reserve the right to take part in the coming election campaign.”

Last weekend, Igor Dodon took part in the presentation of the Party of Socialists’ candidate in single-member constituency No. 1 in Briceni town, Zinaida Grecheanyi, as the party’s informal leader.
