Igor Dodon: We will insist on switchover to mixed-member system regardless of recommendations

President Igor Dodon said the recommendations of the Venice Commission will be taken into account, but they will insist on the switchover to the mixed-member electoral system, IPN reports.

President Dodon told journalists that he received the draft appraisal of the Venice Commission and each of the recommendation is being examined. “What can be taken into account will be taken, but we will insist on the adoption of the bill initiated by the Party of Socialists at the suggestion of the Head of State. We will see whether this bill is supported in Parliament or not. At least the Socialist group will support the bill with some improvements,” he stated.

“No one from outside can tell us, a sovereign state, what we should do,” said Igor Dodon, noting that the people’s interests will be taken into account.

In possession of a leaked document, Reuters on June 6 reported the experts of the Venice Commission concluded that the electoral system change in Moldova is “inappropriate“, invoking risks of political or business interests.
