Igor Dodon wants referendum regardless of Constitutional Court’s decision

President Igor Dodon said he could sign another decree to hold a referendum if the Constitutional Court on July 27 decides to annul the national consultative plebiscite initiated by him. If the Court decides that financing should be allocated for holding the plebiscite, the President is sure that the people will take an active part in the referendum to answer the questions. He made such statements in a meeting with journalists at the State Residence in Condrita on July 26, IPN reports.

“Regardless of the decision of the Constitutional Court, the government, the parliamentary alliance, the Democratic Party will only lose as we will keep our position. If it is decided to annul this referendum, I could sign another decree to hold another referendum. I will insist in order to achieve the set objectives,” stated Igor Dodon.

Under the presidential decree signed on March 28, the plebiscite will take place on September 24 and the people will answer four questions about the conversion of the emergency loans provided by the National Bank of Moldova to three bankrupt banks into a state debt, offering of additional powers to the President to dissolve Parliament in other conditions than the current one, opportuneness of reducing the number of MPs from 101 to 71 and teaching of the History of Moldova course in schools.

For organizing the plebiscite, the Central Election Commission agreed an expenditure estimate of 74.7 million lei.

President Dodon referred also to the referendum to dismiss Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. He said he is sure that this will be held at the end of this October or the start of this November.
