The pro-presidential Party of Socialists collected 1.5 million signatures in favor of switching over to the presidential system of government in Moldova, stated President Igor Dodon. According to him, the process of collecting signatures ended on May 1, IPN reports.
“A lot of people signed, not only the supporters of the Socialists. Over 800,000 people voted the President in the last elections, but two times more people signed now. So, both sympathizers of the right and of the left, regardless of their geopolitical views, signed for bringing things in order,” President Dodon said in the program “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel.
Igor Dodon said the Socialists during the next few weeks will prepare amendments to the legislation and will submit the proposal for switching over from the parliamentary republic to the presidential one. At least 34 signatures of MP are needed to register the Constitution amendment proposal. “There are 24 Socialist MPs and ten more signatures of MP are needed. If these are identified, the six-month long procedure at the Constitutional Court will be launched. If not, we will promote this idea in the parliamentary elections, where we are obliged to win,” stated the President.
He noted that besides the institution of the presidential republic, banning the migration of MPs from one party to another is also a priority. According to him, the current Parliament does not represent the people’s will that was stated four years ago.
