Igor Dodon: Statement of Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in the interests of one party

President Igor Dodon considers the statement on the inopportuneness of holding events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the start of the peacekeeping operation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, is in the interests of one party only, the Democratic Party, and has nothing to do with the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The issue was raised in a dialogue with journalists at the State Residence in Condrita on July 26, IPN reports.

“We signed an agreement in 1992, concerning the peacekeeping mission on the Nistru, where particular actions are stipulated. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said one of the reasons for which it opposes the staging of festivities is the fact that the peacekeeping mission wasn’t transferred under the auspices of the OSCE, as it proposed not only once. Are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Democratic Party ready to scrap this agreement? Do they understand what this would mean? What does the Ministry of Foreign Affairs want to provoke? It is the decision of a political party that has nothing in common with the interests of the Republic of Moldova,” said President Dodon.

According to him, in the festivities that are not military in character he intends to confer state awards on the first members of the Joint Control Commission, who worked on this since 1992, not on soldiers.

“I think the Head of State does not violate something when he legally takes part, as the representative of the state, in events held based on an agreement signed by the Presidents of the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation in 1992,” stated Igor Dodon.

A week ago, President Dodon announced that he intends to take part in the activities that will be staged in Tiraspol on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the constitution of the peacekeeping mission, where he will confer state awards on Russian peacekeepers in appreciation of their mission in the region. On July 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova summoned Russia’s Ambassador in Chisinau, who was warned about the inadmissibility of participation by Russian officials in the festivities organized unilaterally by the unrecognized Transnistrian administration.
