Igor Dodon: Snap parliamentary elections will not be held in May-June

The president of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said the PSRM will not allow holding snap parliamentary elections during the pandemic, in May-June. According to him, at least 1 million doses of vaccine will be bought and 300,000-400,000 citizens will be immunized and the snap elections are now out of the question, no matter what wishes President Maia Sandu has, IPN reports.

In a new edition of his online program, Igor Dodon said the PSRM has a number of instruments for blocking the President’s “caprices”. He also reminded of a Constitutional Court decision of 2017 according to which elections cannot be held if money for the organization of elections is not stipulated in the state budget, noting that money for the snap parliamentary elections wasn’t earmarked in the 2021 budget and the Socialists will not vote relevant amendments to the state budget until the vaccines are not purchased. He noted that of the 120 million lei needed for snap election, 600,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines can be bought.

According to the Socialist leader, given the current vaccination rate, if about 300,000 people are vaccinated with both of the doses by mid-July, he is ready to sit at the negotiating table and discuss the snap elections, if a Government is not voted in. If a Government is invested, the snap elections could be held in October-November.

In another development, Igor Dodon said the chances for Vladimir Golovatiuc to be voted in Prime Minister are rather real. “I see that Missis President Maia Sandu will push the point as she wants snap elections and wants more seats of MP for the PAS. The harder she insists on this, the greater will be the percentage they will lose and they will miss the possibility of obtaining more sears,” stated the politician.
