Igor Dodon: Presidential elections should not be delayed if early parliamentary elections aren’t held

The presidential elections should not be delayed if early legislative elections are not held simultaneously with these, chairman of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon said in the program “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel, IPN reports.

“Holding presidential elections on October 30 will be an ideal variant if early parliamentary elections take place simultaneously with these. If not, I see no reason for the delay. The presidential elections must be held in June. But those from power do not want early elections. The government pursues the goal of growing a candidate for the presidency who now has no chance of winning,” said the Socialists’ leader.

Though he supports the idea that the President should be elected by the people’s vote, Igor Dodon considers that the March 4 Judgment of the Constitutional Court (CC) is illegal. “The CC took such a decision on the instructions of the ruling party. The goal was to avoid early parliamentary elections. Plahotniuc no longer needs Parliament when he controls both the CC president and the prosecutor general,” he stated.

Igor Dodon expressed his indignation at the Central Election Commission’s decision to reject the initiative of the Platform “Dignity and Truth” to hold a constitutional referendum. “It’s serious when the wish of over 400,000 people is ignored. I and my colleagues and many members of the PSRM signed in favor. I will invite the Commission’s president Iurie Ciocan to a Parliament sitting to provide explanations,” he said.
