The President must play a decisive role and the role of a balance in the political system of the Republic of Moldova, incumbent President Igor Dodon stated on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the institution of the office of President. “The powers enjoyed by the President elected by the people should enable this to overcome institutional crises, to ensure the functionality of the executive power during periods of political and parliamentary instability,” stated President Dodon, being quoted by IPN.
“Regrettably, a series of the President’s powers were annulled in time and this led to the undermining of the state power and consolidation of oligarchy in Moldovan politics. During three decades, experts, politicians and people of science stated their contradictory opinions about the President’s role in the state administration and in society. However, the country’s political history of the last 30 years shows that the instability in Parliament, on the one hand, and the reduced powers of the President, on the other hand, weren’t always beneficial for the functionality of the executive power,” President Dodon posted on Facebook.
According to him, the citizens need an active, efficient President who is able to solve the country’s problems and is a good mediator between the branches of power in the state. “I’m hopeful that the members of the constitutional reform commission that was recently constituted by decree, who are famous personalities from the fields of human rights and public administration, will also address relative aspects of the status and powers of the President of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Igor Dodon.
On September 3, it is 30 years of the institution of the office of President of the Republic of Moldova. In 1990, the MPs considered that Moldova needs a President elected by the people. The status and powers of the President were defined in the Constitution four years later, in 1994.
