Igor Dodon: Local elections should be held concurrently with early parliamentary elections

President Igor Dodon said the new local elections in Chisinau and Balti scheduled for May 20 this year should be held simultaneously with the early parliamentary elections. This will enable to save money given the invoked lack of planned funds. The subject was discussed by President Dodon in a meeting with the head of the Party of Socialists Zinaida Grecheanyi, IPN reports.

“We discussed the organization and holding of the local and parliamentary elections planned for this year. In this connection, I note that the local elections in in Chisinau and Balti and in other localities should be held in strict compliance with the national legislation and should take place on May 20 and any attempt to postpone them or, even more serious, to prevent them is condemnable,” Igor Dodon wrote on his Facebook page.

According to him, the invoked lack of planned financial resources is senseless and simultaneously runs counter to all the democratic principles and generally accepted standards and to the principles that should be respected by the Republic of Moldova as a state in relation to all the international institutions.

President Dodon said that if the parliamentary majority wants to save money on elections, holding the local elections on May 20 concurrently with early parliamentary elections is the optimal solution. “This will enable to save tens of millions of lei and to keep all the rule of law principles and a democracy, sticking to the letter of the law,” he stated.

The interlocutors also discussed such issues as the spring-summer session of Parliament, the draft laws that the Socialists will propose for adoption and the Party of Socialists’ priorities at legislative level.
