Igor Dodon: I recommend farmers to leave politics aside

The farmers started to formulate not economic demands, but political demands already, such as the resignation of the Government and snap elections, said incumbent President Igor Dodon. This makes him think that there is President-elect Maia Sandu and PPPDA leader Andrei Năstase behind the protest.

In a new online program “Igor Dodon. President Responds”, he recommended the farmers who indeed need support to leave politics aside. “We all want snap parliamentary elections, but I don’t think you want Government to leave as, if the Government leaves, who will make changes to the legislation to offer you another 500 million lei from the agriculture subsidization fund? Without a Government, this is impossible. If the Government is removed, the budget law cannot be amended. The Government should approve the changes and this way you will block yourselves,” IPN quoted Igor Dodon as saying.

He noted that the demand to put off the introduction of the higher VAT rate in agriculture was supported by Parliament. For 2021, the agriculture subsidization fund is to be raised from 900 million lei to 1.1 billion lei.

As to the motion of no confidence proposed by the opposition, Igor Dodon said it is the rights of the MPs to do this, but he does not think that the motion will be carried. Most probably, a quorum will not be present at the Parliament sitting where the motion is to be debated. As the ordinary parliamentary session was closed, Parliament is to have a special sitting. Another special sitting will be called when President-elect Maia Sandu will be invested.
