President Igor Dodon says he is absolutely against early parliamentary elections. If the Sandu Government is ousted over the next few days, the president would prefer that another cabinet, preferably formed by Socialists and supported by the current parliamentary majority is appointed. The statements were made in the context of Igor Dodon saying that the odds of the current Government to dissolve are 90% and that the Socialists will not accept the Government’s decision to amend the Law on the Prosecution Service through a special procedure and make the prime minister in charge of preselecting candidates for the position of prosecutor general, IPN reports.
“If the Government resigns on Monday or Tuesday, I will start discussions with the parliamentary groups on the same day to see if a parliamentary majority can be formed. I can assure you that the Socialists will not make any kind of parliamentary majority with anyone except ACUM bloc”, said the head of state during a talk-show on N4.
Igor Dodon believes that the step taken by Maia Sandu regarding the assumption of responsibility is a mistake and time will show this. “ACUM bloc could go with the Democratic Party, but then I will not accept the candidate for the position of Prime Minister they put forward, and we would need to have early elections”, stated the head of state. Igor Dodon said that whatever the situation, he will find a way to manage it.
The president argues that the procedure proposed by Maia Sandu to appoint a prosecutor general goes against the constitutional provisions and the agreement signed between the coalition partners. “The Government will come to Parliament to read out the draft on assuming the responsibility, no questions will be asked, no speeches or debates will follow, and if there is a motion of no confidence, it will be put up to a vote and that’s the end of it,” says Igor Dodon. According to him, the Socialists have prepared a motion of no confidence in this regard and if Maia Sandu will not withdraw the initiative until 15:00, today, the probability of the Government to be dissolved is very high.
If today in Parliament, no one will be against the Government’s measure, the draft is considered to have come into effect. If there are any objections to the draft, a motion of no confidence is put forward against the Government, which will be discussed in the Legislature for three days, followed by a vote.
