President Igor Dodon said Veaceslav Platon is shrewd and can implement all kinds of schemes and is thus dangerous to state security. “I state my own opinion, not as the President, but as an economist. Undoubtedly, he is not a saint. He took part in various schemes. But the prosecutor says that he wasn’t actually involved in the bank fraud,” Igor Dodon was quoted by IPN as stating in the program “President Responds”.
The official noted that Platon was convicted in the bank fraud case and is one of the witnesses who can describe the events and provide evidence for the conviction of Plahotniuc, Candu, Shor and the rest. The prosecutor should make use of this situation and discuss with Platon so as to clarify the bank fraud. The other charges against Platon should be examined separately.
President Dodon also said that Veaceslav Platon and Vlad Plahotniuc worked together in the past and now one of them wants to make statements about the other one and the prosecutors should thus do their job.
Veaceslav Platon was arrested in July 2016 and was later sentenced to 30 years in jail for swindle and money laundering in considerable amounts. On May 18 this year, Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo said the case started against Veaceslav Platon was fully fabricated and a procedure to review the sentence will be initiated. He also said that Vladimir Plahotniuc is one of the main beneficiaries of the bank theft.
