President Igor Dodon is considering the possibility of running in the parliamentary elections of next February on the list of the Party of Socialists (PSRM). This way he will help the party obtain a majority of seats of MP because a President cannot efficiently fulfil his duties without the support of a parliamentary majority. He said that in the presidential elections of 2016 he was supported by the citizens, but his opponents reduced his powers and the Socialists’ task is thus to gain a majority of votes under the party list and to win in the largest number of constituencies. President Dodon made such statements after the meeting of the PSRM’s National Council held on September 5, IPN reports.

Igor Dodon told the press that he took part in the Socialists’ meeting as an invitee and as the unofficial leader of the Party of Socialists. According to him, today the PSRM starts an active pre-election campaign aimed at preparing for the legislative elections. The President does not rule out possibility of running for MP on the Socialist ticket as the legislation allows for this. The legislation does not envision the suspension of the President and of the Prime Minister from office for the period of the election campaign.

Igor Dodon noted he will help the PSRM, but will continue to hold the office of President. He also said that the pro-European parties have ruled during the past nine years. They changed places, but were government partners. After nine years of disaster, there is an alternative and this is offered by the PSRM, which is the only parliamentary party that has been in the opposition from the start.  

As of September 8, the PSRM will stage massive events in each district center so as to choose the candidates for constituencies. “At the end of October or the start of November, we will come together in a larger number in central Chisinau and will then go and win at the parliamentary elections,” stated Igor Dodon, without specifying if they will mount protests or something else downtown.
