Igor Dodon discusses elections and new status of Moldova at EEU with Peter Michalko

President Igor Dodon welcomes the fact that the new local elections in Chisinau municipality so far took place without the utilization of geopolitical messages, but is concerned about the attempts made by some to return to the geopolitical arguments in the runoffs. The subject was discussed in a meeting with the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko, IPN reports.

“I think we should avoid geopolitical discussions in the election campaign. The people in Chisinau should see the professional capacities and the real solutions proposed by the candidates,” said President Dodon.

In a posting on Facebook, Igor Dodon noted that he discussed a number of topical subjects related to the internal and foreign policy of the country with Peter Michalko, including the relations with the EU following the obtaining by Moldova of the status of observer at the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

“I reiterated that this status does not runs counter to the provisions of the Association Agreement with the EU. This step offers Moldova a platform for discussions with other partners and an opportunity of learning more about the EEU, which is a huge market for us and is interesting from economic viewpoint. I noted that Moldova could become a connection bridge between the EU and EEA in the future and both of the sides will stand to gain,” wrote President Dodon.

Igor Dodon underlined the interest in having efficient cooperation relations with the EU, reiterating that Moldova should pursue a balanced foreign policy and should build constructive relations both with the East and with the West.
