Igor Dodon: CC cannot pronounce on procedures taking place in Parliament

The Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPPDA) uses the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova as a political instrument, said incumbent President Igor Dodon, who noted that the same tools were used by the former leader of the Democratic Party Vladimir Plahotniuc, IPN reports.

“They try to use the tools that were also used by Vladimir Plahotniuc. They use the Constitutional Court as a political instrument. I hope a lot that those from the Constitutional Court will not allow to be involved in the events related to the political struggles in Parliament. It is the supreme legislative body that expresses the people’s will,” stated President Dodon.

He noted that the CC can pronounce on bills that run counter to the Constitution, but cannot pronounce on the voting procedures in the legislature.

“When there are laws that go against the Constitution it is one thing, but when this starts to say that Parliament had or didn’t have the right according to the procedures, this is not right as the procedures are set down by Parliament,” said Igor Dodon.

The Constitutional Court suspended the recently adopted law by which the sale of the site of the former Republican Stadium to the U.S. was annulled and the site was returned under state ownership.

The CC also suspended Law No. 218 of December 3, 2020 that excludes from the powers of the President of the Republic of Moldova of the possibility of coordinating the activity of the Security and Intelligence Service and of naming its administration and provides that the Service is transferred under parliamentary control.
