Igor Dodon about political ambitions of Ion Ceban: He didn’t consult us

The president of honor of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon categorically rejects the idea that he is involved in the political project announced by mayor general Ion Ceban. He said the National Alternative Movement is the personal project of the mayor of Chisinau and this wasn’t coordinated with the Socialists. Dodon noted that Ceban continues being politically supported by PSRM in the management of the city, but the party dissociates itself from any political ambition of the mayor of Chisinau, IPN reports.

Igor Dodon said that at different stages, he had a say about the career of Irina Vlah, Ion Ceban and Ion Chicu, the three being intensely promoted by PSRM. However, he assured that he didn’t influence somehow the involvement of the three in politics.

“I’m proud that we, the Socialists, managed to promote persons who entered big politics or want to enter this. I want to wish success to Ion Ceban, Ion Chicu, the Bashkan of Gagauzia who aspires to office of President. They are all independent individuals. My position was decisive when these three persons were promoted to the posts of mayor general, Premier and Bashkan. Many mates were against. I’m happy for them and wish them success and, if need be, I’m ready to support them. It is not at all easy to build a party that would gain 5-10% of the vote. I know it from my own experience,” Igor Dodon stated in the talk show “The Fourth Estate” on N4 TV channel.

Dodon said the mayor general didn’t consult PSRM when he decided to create the National Alternative Movement, but he continues closely cooperating with Ion Ceban, discussing yet only aspects that refer to the municipality of Chisinau.

Ion Ceban wasn’t obliged to consult us about the creation of this movement. It is he who will decide whether there will be political party or not. As a mayor, we support him. I will not dear to say, as my former party leader said, that he is a traitor. Ceban stopped to be a party member in 2019. This is not our project. It is his own project. I do not discuss political issues with Ceban. We discuss subjects referring to Chisinau. As the president of the Moldovan-Russian organization, I discuss interesting projects related to the city with him. We want to light the City’s Gates,” stated Igor Dodon.

Ion Ceban withdrew from PSRM in November 2019, after he was elected mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau. On December 30, 2021, the mayor announced the creation of the
National Alternative Movement as a political project designed to offer an alternative to the citizens who were disappointed by the current government. Ceban avoids saying if the launched project will turn into a political party or not.
