Igor Dodon: 2024 is year of regional and world electoral battles, which will also influence Moldova

The leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon says that 2024 will be the year of regional and world electoral battles, which will also influence the situation in the Republic of Moldova. As for the presidential election, he considers that all opposition parties must unite and identify a common candidate to fight against Maia Sandu, while the subject of a balanced foreign policy must be proposed at the referendum, IPN reports.

In his live show, the former President said that 2024 will not be a simple year from a geopolitical point of view and can be called the year of crucial elections. “There will be elections in Romania, elections for the President, and also elections in the Russian Federation in March. There will be elections to the European Parliament. The election campaign starts in March and the elections will take place in June and these will change the picture and the administration of the European Commission. There will be elections in the United States of America, which will influence the situation worldwide and tangentially the situation in the Republic of Moldova,” said the Socialist heavyweight.

According to Igor Dodon, the presidential election in Moldova and the referendum could be held on October 6, 13 or 20. The intention is to hold the election before the cold period of the year, until the high bills reach the people, and also before the U.S. election. “Maia Sandu understands that she is principally protected by the U.S. administration,” stated Dodon.

The politician urged the opposition parties to combine forces to identify a common candidate. Discussions have begun. “We are looking for a common candidate. We hope that we will be able to identify such a candidacy. The top objective is to defeat Maia Sandu,” noted Igor Dodon.

As for the referendum at which citizens are to pronounce on the accession to the European Union, the PSRM leader believes that this will only divide society. “We, the Socialists, consider that it is not right to ask such a question in the referendum. Let’s give also other options to the citizens. We, as a pro-Moldovan party, insist that the referendum should treat the subject of a balanced foreign policy - good relations both with the East and the West,” said Igor Dodon.
