The referendums in the Autonomous Unit of Gagauzia are a subject used by the political forces from Chisinau for electoral purposes, but they will not have a legal effect. The law enforcement bodies will give an appraisal, Head of Parliament Igor Corman, who is the deputy chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, said in the program “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

Igor Corman said the problems faced by Gagauzia date back from the 1990s. A part of them were solved, but new problems appeared meanwhile. “I think the dialogue with those from Gagauzia was inappropriate in the past. Similar problems were witnessed in districts and inside the ruling alliance. We went to Gagauzia to show our openness and to change the approach. We decided to set up a parliamentary commission that will deal with the problems related to the region’s status and to Moldova’s legislation in general,” stated the Speaker.

He added that they discuss a lot the region’s problems and manipulate a lot, but nobody actually deals with them. Given that this year is an electoral one, these situations are a good occasion for speculating. In the January 22 meeting of Moldovan officials and the Gagauz authorities, it was decided to set up four Parliament offices on Moldova’s territory, one of which in Comrat.

“We didn’t go to Comrat to appraise things. The law enforcement bodies will do this. But we laid emphasis on the meaning of the two referendums that refer to Moldova’s statehood. I consider this is an artificial subject. We are not yet at the stage of joining the EU, but when we reach this stage we will hold a national referendum to find out the people’s opinion,” stated Igor Corman.

He added that the statements made by the Romanian President Traian Basescu stirred the conflict in Gagauzia up. As a result, they started to mix up Moldova’s intention to integrate into the EU with the union with Romania.
